What is Morality?

This question and the concept of morality has served as one of the bigger things attached to my need to leave the faith.

The definitions of the term Morality are:

  • principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.
  • a particular system of values and principles of conduct, especially one held by a specified person or society.
  • the extent to which an action is right or wrong.
Christians are taught that morality comes from God and those without God are immoral, empty people.

I can't say that I never questioned this notion. But, I didn't really put much thought into it until recently. I guess I had concluded previously that morality came from God, it was the human definition and interpretation that was the issue. But, when I sat down and really looked at this, like, looked at what the Bible says; this book that is supposed to be the one and only book to answer our questions about life, I started to see some problems.

If morality supposedly comes from God and He is the moral standard, why are there so many immoral things in the Bible, many done by or encouraged by God himself?

A rapist must marry his victim. Many were young girls.

God sent the angel of death to murder the first born of all the Egyptian households because the Pharoh held the Jewish Israelites as slaves.

God turned around and let the Jewish people own their own slaves. He allowed them to sell their own daughters into slavery. He allowed people to own other people as property.

God tricked Abraham into nearly murdering his son Issac, just to prove he loved Him enough to do it.

God killed off the entire human race and all of the animals aside from what was on a boat. Because he was mad.

If a woman couldn't prove her virginity she was to be stoned to death.

God tortured Job, for amusement.

If our morals come from God, he probably shouldn't have been so awful, because these examples do not follow the definition of morality. Not by ANY standards. Some being from the Old Testament do not matter. It's supposedly the same God...

Jesus said some moral things in the Bible, like love your neighbor and do unto others. But, the Bible is big. Jesus saying moral stuff doesn't take up much real estate and these things don't excuse or negate the immoral stuff.

It is obvious that in this world there are good and bad people in every defined group and whether someone has a good moral compass or can show love and empathy for others has NOTHING to do with their religion. It has to do with their upbringing and their personalities.

There are good Christian people and bad Christian people.
There are good people who are Republicans and bad people who are Republicans.
Same for Democrats.
Same for liberals and conservatives. Same for rich people and for poor people.
Same for gay people and straight people.

Whether or not someone is a shit person is not directly connected to them being a Christian or not. So, with that being the case and people inside the church being immoral while people without religion are capable of being moral, the morals coming from God thing is obviously horse shit.
