Why Not A Progressive Christian?

You may be wondering, why not just take on a more liberal version of Christianity? Why abandon it completely? There are all kinds of progressive denominations nowadays. So why not just do that?

I tried. For years.

I tried reconciling everything I wanted the Bible to be with what it really says. I argued with other Christians and accused them of taking things out of context to support their hateful and intolerant narrative. I ignored the icky parts of the Bible and only embraced the love-one-another parts. I had decided that I was right in my interpretation of the Bible and those condemning people to hell were just bigots. They weren't really Christians, they were using the Bible to make themselves superior. I have since learned that this is a logical fallacy. It's the No True Scotsman fallacy.

What I figured out is that in actuality, they're not wrong about anything. The stuff they are pointing out as immoral and how they are using the Bible to judge others; it's not a case of them using the Bible incorrectly or misinterpreting it. They're using it as intended. The truth is that the Bible is a gross, vile book. Turns out I was the delusional one, picking out the few loving things I could find and making those the main narrative. At the end of the day the Bible does say and condone a bunch of terrible shit. No amount of liberal spin can save it. Once I realized that, I couldn't stay.

Progressive Christianity is cute. But I can't. It's not for me.

I looked at the way I cherry picked from the Bible, myself. I realized that I was fooling myself. I could have stuck with the liberal christian thing, but I would be doing it alone, living with the conservative people around me. Why try to morph Christianity into something more palatable and then convince myself that I'm right and everyone else is doing it wrong. They're not. It just IS wrong. Best to just let go of it entirely.
