Chat With Mom

It was a constructive conversation. It was a bit cathartic to get to say some of this stuff out loud, but I was worried about freaking her out a little. But, as usual, she took it just fine. She does firmly believe that this is a mid life crisis of sorts, having gone through something similar at the same age. She said that she knows I will figure everything out and move on, eventually. But that she understands my feelings of anger and betrayal right now. She doesn't throw the entire Bible in the trash like I do. But she does have some real unorthodox beliefs and she was open to listening to me vent about all the things I have learned and where it has led me. 

We did hit one main point of disagreement though and it was on the topic of morality. This does seem to be the one area where people get hung up. They cannot fathom how people could determine right from wrong without God and religion. So we talked about that. She did seem to be trying to understand what I was saying, but I am not sure she really got it. I should say, I'm not sure she agreed. She hadn't ever considered that as a possibility before. People are of the belief that society cannot function without religion because it would be a free for all. I explained why, in today's world, it's not the case for a lot of people. You can absolutely teach empathy and consideration for others outside of the context of religion. So, some food for thought for her.

We didn't delve too deep on the subject and basically just stayed with some main overview topics. We touched on after life. She is a firm believer in reincarnation. I'm unconvinced there is an after life, but if there is it probably looks more like reincarnation. Her takeaway from the conversation was that I was going to get mad and eventually I was going to find my center and pinpoint what MY personal beliefs are. She said, it doesn't matter what you think God is or who you think God is. There's magic out there. That's all. My point is basically just that the Bible is bullshit. If God does exist and is that character from the Bible, he's a total dick who deserves NO worship whatsoever. I'm saying, it is possible there is something else out there; something bigger. But the Bible and its God ain't it.
